As 2017 draws to a close, JacobsWyper Architects is proud to announce awards for projects in our museum, higher education and pharmaceutical sectors.
Over the past few weeks, recently-completed projects for Johnson & Johnson, Swarthmore College and Arbutus Biopharma were recognized for design and construction excellence by AIA Pennsylvania, the General Building Contractors Association (GBCA) of Philadelphia and the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter. Each of these projects owes its success to the effective synergy of all parties involved, including designers, engineers, contractors and clients, in the formation of new spaces and facilities that inspire, inform and encourage innovation and creativity.
Johnson & Johnson Our Story at the Powerhouse, which involved the renovation and adaptive re-use of a former 1907 Powerhouse building to accommodate an interactive, multisensory experience celebrating the company’s heritage of global healthcare innovation, was presented with an Honor Award for Historic Preservation by AIA Pennsylvania during the 2017 Architectural Excellence Design Awards simulcast stream on October 27. The online stream format is new for AIA Pennsylvania, with viewers across the state tuning in from various locations to view the awards presentation. Head juror Reed Kroloff, AIA commented that the project shows “a vigorous approach to preservation, balancing reverence for the original building with insertions of elegant new fabric.”
GBCA’s Philadelphia chapter recognized both Our Story at the Powerhouse, as well as JWA’s new Whittier Hall Academic Building at Swarthmore College, at their 20th Annual Construction Excellence Awards ceremony on November 14. The GBCA Excellence Awards aim to “recognize the highest quality of workmanship and building innovation” in the Philadelphia area. Our Story at the Powerhouse received an award for Best Adaptive Re-use Project, presented to contractor HSC Builders & Construction Managers and JacobsWyper. Whittier Hall, a new 20,000-square-foot facility containing Psychology Department suites as well as Engineering shops, was awarded Best Educational Institution Project.
On Thursday, November 16, the Associated Builders and Contractors Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter presented Arbutus Biopharma’s new North American Headquarters Facility with a Construction Excellence Award at their 27th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. Designed by JacobsWyper in close collaboration with The Norwood Company, Arbutus’ new headquarters contains a mix of office space and chemistry/biology lab suites in a layout that emphasizes openness and collaboration.
Our congratulations to each project team for these outstanding achievements!
