The new facility for Becton, Dickinson & Company supports the manufacturing of diagnostic instruments and kits that will be marketed in the US, Canada and Europe. The facility was designed to meet all applicable US-FDA, PMA and cGMP standards, regulations and guidelines. It also achieved LEED Silver Certification under the LEED CI 2.0 for Commercial Interiors.
The project was a fast-track collaboration between the Engineers, Architects, Contractors and Owners. The project took 7 months from the commencement of design to owner occupancy, and it literally was being designed and documented as it was being built. The success of this project reflects the team’s ability to work together collaboratively under an intense time constraint.
The facility utilizes a previously constructed 100,500 sf shell, of which 46,500 sf has been fit out with office, conference, manufacturing, lab and support spaces. The remainder of shell space may be utilized for future expansion. The language of the existing architecture was preserved for the most part, however windows and sunshades were added to provide natural lighting and to reduce cooling loads. The envelope of the entire structure was enhanced with additional insulating value to reduce cooling and heating loads.
