The new AZ dining center cuts a bold silhouette against the Newark, Delaware skyline. The fan-shaped building is sheathed in white aluminum panels and is fronted by a curved glass curtain wall that acts as a dynamic proscenium for the nature beyond. Its 22,000 sf includes a dining room, server, kitchen and related spaces. The center is designed to serve up to 260 people ...

AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals hired JWA to provide architectural lead and planning services for laboratory expansion and a new cafeteria addition at their Newark, Delaware site.
The facility had two separate cafeterias that did not adequately serve the needs of the staff. This new, centralized cafeteria replaced them, as part of a 37,000 sf expansion. It is prominently sited adjacent to the main administration building and visible from Interstate 95.
Project scope involves design and construction of approximately 19,000 sf and includes:
Cafeteria: multifunctional space (6000 sf). The space will normally provide seating for 260 patrons, but can be modified for other uses. Furniture can be moved to provide assembly seating for 660 persons with allocated space for kiosks. Dividing the main space with movable partitions can accommodate private parties, and provision is made for outside dining and barbeque areas.
Serving area, kitchen, loading dock (5,000 sf)
Conference rooms w/serving area and activities room (1,500 sf). Movable partitions provide flexibility in size and number of rooms: either two small or one large conference room can be connected to the activities room, with a potential buffet set-up at the adjacent serving area.
Coffee bar, vending area, phone booths, bathrooms
Design objectives were:
To achieve a unique space with abundant natural light.
A view to and sense of connection with the surrounding landscape.
A warm, casually elegant, restaurant-like ambiance; multifunctionality and flexibility for maximum efficiency.
JWA planned the building, structural and site design to allow for a future 20,000 sf addition, which will further enhance the elevation of the campus as viewed from Interstate 95.
