Extensively remodeled and reconstructed between 1914 and 1917, the Old Barracks has been operated as a museum during most of the 20th century. By 1980, the roof leaked, electrical and plumbing systems were inadequate for modern uses, and heating piping leaked steam that was contributing to the deterioration of the building and collections. Preceded by the earlier preparation of a historic structure report and reconstruction of the exterior brick façade of the Officers’ House, the project consisted of three project phases to: restore the Officers’ House interior; replace HVAC equipment and infrastructure; and, full restoration of the interior and exterior of the Soldiers’ Barracks and the Barracks Lot.
