West Hall, located on the RPI campus and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was constructed between 1869 and 1871, and enlarged in 1896 and again in 1923. In 1953, RPI renovated the building for classrooms, faculty offices, and other educational uses. By the late 1980’s, the building showed the effects of deferred maintenance.
An existing conditions assessment report with recommendations was prepared and the exterior of the building was restored as a phased five year project. Work included: new slate shingles and copper flashing; replacement of deteriorated and missing wood trim and brackets; repointing and repainting of brick and stone façades; restoration and repainting of wood double-hung windows and installation of weather stripping; installation of operable interior thermal sash; exterior painting; and, restoration of wood entry doors and hardware.
Site work included: repairing brick and limestone site stairs; repair and refinishing of cast-iron and steel railings; replacement of sidewalks; new site stairs, walkways, and retaining walls; regrading of lawns and paved parking areas; and, design of site lighting including bollards and reproduction historic post-mounted fixtures manufactured by the firm that made the original fixtures in the 1920’s.
Project services were performed and directed by Robert A. Petito Jr., AIA, Associate with Jacobs/Wyper, while formerly serving as Principal and Project Manager with John G. Waite Associates, Architects, PLLC.
