Alcan Cable, based in the United States, is a global leader in aluminum and packaging, as well as aluminum recycling. JacobsWyper planned and designed three facilities for Alcan in Tianjin, in association with Hooker Cockram Construction of Australia and a local design institute. Located near the Yellow Sea, the complex includes a specialty cable plant, an adjacent rod mill and an administration building. The manufacturing plant includes a standing seam roof system on steel purlins, as well as insulated metal panels on the façade. Huge rolling cranes and other sizeable pieces of equipment necessitated an open plan with a 60-foot span between columns. An ample supply of natural light, both from punched windows at the exterior walls and a light monitor spanning the facility’s spine, keeps production areas bright. The two-story administration building features a modern, double-height lobby, as well as conference and training rooms. A cafeteria and locker room contribute to the comfort of employees.
