Klehr Center for Jewish Life
The 6,000 sf Klehr Center was built within one of Lancaster’s historic residential neighborhoods, and its design fits well into the historic vocabulary of the area. The building will be used for religious, social and academic purposes. It has received the Associated Building Contractors Central Pennsylvania Chapter’s First Place Award of Excellence for 2009.

Klehr Center for Jewish Life
Total Project Budget: $1,900,000
Location: Lancaster, Pennsylvania
The Klehr Center for Jewish Life is a new 6,400 sf structure that replaces a smaller former residence on College Avenue, the eastern boundary of the main campus. The Center will be the welcoming focus of Jewish activities on the campus, and it will include a sanctuary, library, seminar room, dining room, kosher kitchen, living room and student activities area. The facilities are designed for and available for general academic purposes.
College Avenue provides a very strong architectural context of typical Lancaster single family housing stock - brick structures, white trim, simple gabled slate roofs and front porches - that the new structure respects in the primary volume that fronts the Avenue. In back the building departs from the norm with stronger colors and newer materials. The entire structure is roofed with an unfading grey Vermont slate.
The building is designed to be LEED Certifiable at a Silver Level. The project employees a ground source heat pump system, a demand control ventilation system (for large gatherings) in addition to a natural ventilation system, natural and local materials, and a very well insulated exterior wall system, among other features.
