For 157 years, Northern Children’s Services has continually provided a safe haven for children and families facing extraordinary challenges. By providing family, school and community-based services and support, NCS directly affects the lives of nearly 3,000 children a year and welcomes children and families from all backgrounds. Merrick Hall, built in 1862 as an Italianate style country villa, is the oldest building on the six-acre campus in Roxborough. It sits among several buildings designed by Horace Trumbauer in the late 1920s – together, these buildings form a cohesive ensemble of 3-story structures built of Wissahickon Schist.
To accommodate NCS’s New Generations Program, Merrick Hall has been completely renovated and restored and with new additions, now provides a safe, accessible and welcoming home and services to teen mothers and their infants. The interior has been completely renovated and the exterior has been restored to meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. A new elevator and two new fire stairs were also added.
