The Science History Institute (SHI) preserves, interprets and promotes the history of chemistry, chemical engineering, and related sciences and technologies. To increase their impact and influence, SHI wanted a facility that supports its library and digital presence, safeguards its priceless collection, attracts researchers and augments staff capabilities. Working with exhibit design consultants, we transformed a historic bank building adjacent to the SHI’s headquarters into an integrated museum and conference center, with flexible meeting space, climate-controlled galleries and storage facilities for their major collections of chemical instruments, papers, books, photographs and fine art. The design is both a contemporary intervention, incorporating glass floors, stairs and railings, and a historic restoration of the original 19th century structure, culminating in a spectacular environment for exhibitions, conferences and enhanced programming.
